We had a wonderful time in Knock Free Church, Garrabost, on the evening of Tuesday 12th June 2007, with Jackie Nakabugo, accompanied by Matt Harris from Compassion. Our minister, Rev James Maciver, introduced Jackie and Matt and spoke briefly about how the evening was especially focussed on the work of Compassion, with Jackie being a living example of the benefits sponsorship brings. He gave details about the work of Compassion briefly, and emphasised that one of the main purposes of the event was for people to take up a sponsorship. This was followed by a running of the Compassion documentary DVD A Life in a Day, after which Jackie spoke.

With around 230 people present from various parts of the island as well as from the congregation, Jackie gave an account of her childhood in Gaba, Uganda and then went on to tell the audience about how she came to be sponsored through Compassion by a woman from the USA.

Jackie appealed to those present to take up a sponsorship, either as
individuals or as groups, and by the end of the evening 28 new
sponsorships had been completed with many others taking forms
to complete at home. We really hope that those who took forms
will complete them immediately and send them on to Compassion.

Jackie also spoke movingly of how much the Lord Jesus Christ
meant to her as her personal Saviour. Her testimony to his grace
which saved her from sin was as powerful as her account of how
sponsorship through Compassion saved her from poverty. She
made an appeal to the young people present to give their lives
to the Lord.

On Wednesday 13th June, 2007, Jackie and Matt paid a visit to Aird Primary School in Point and Jackie spoke there to two classes who listened intently as she spoke about her own experiences as a child in Gaba and of the huge difference between the conditions she and her family lived in and those of the children who lived here in Point.

Later that day Jackie and Matt left for London from Stornoway Airport. Jackie is returned to Uganda on Tuesday 19th June.

We thank God for their visit. We give thanks for Jackie's life and testimony. We praise him for Matt and all who work at Compassion in their various spheres of service. We give thanks for Compassion and for the way in which God has blessed the work to the extent that 850,000 children in Asia, Africa and South America are now sponsored. Our little contribution at this Evening with Jackie will hopefully be another small step towards that magic millionth child. We give thanks to God also for the generosity of those who came to hear Jackie. A total of £1,120 was raised be donations at the meeting, including a number of contributions from people who had heard about the event but were unable to attend.

Please remember Compassion, and especially please sponsor a child. Change a life for 60p a day. The Compassion website is at www.compassionuk.org

"But if anyone has this world's goods and sees his brother in need yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth." - I John chapter 3 verses 17-18.
