A song called "watching the Saviour", written by Catriona Macdonald, Staffin, Isle of Skye. The song speaks about the pain of the Cross from the perspective of an onlooker at the scene. The singer is James Maciver.
Again by Catriona Macdonald, Staffin, Isle of Skye, this song is about examining our love for Christ. He is the speaker throughout the song and as each verse ends with his question "Do you love me?" to Peter in John chapter 21, so we are challenged to answer it for ourselves. The singer is James Maciver.
By John MacRury, this song called "Gairdeachas" (Rejoicing) is a celebration of the victorious work of Jesus Christ. Combined with the note of triumph which runs through the song is a call to listen to the voice of this victorious Saviour speaking to us now through the Bible. As we listen to Jesus and put our trust in him so the voice we hear assures us that we will triumph over all adversities through him. The singer is James Maciver.
The late Mary Bell Graham was for many years a valued member of Knock Free Church and acted as Church Officer for a number of years. These two songs were recorded on reel-to-reel tape many years ago. Her son Murdo Graham had the recordings transferred to CD and digitally enhanced and he has kindly provided them for us to use on this section of the website.
The singing of Gaelic spiritual songs has been a strong feature of island spirituality for generations. The songs are traditionally sung unaccompanied, like the singing of the Psalms. On this page we hope to bring you a variety of songs and singers for your enjoyment, including English songs and hymns.
Written by Philip P. Bliss (838-1876), "Man of Sorrows" is a reference to the prophet Isaiah's depiction of the "suffering servant" (Isa. 52: 13-53: 12). The full text draws on that prophetic vision and on the gospel narratives of Christ's crucifixion and atoning death. The 2nd stanza makes a very personal confession "in my place condemned he stood, sealed my pardon with his blood." Bliss left home as a young boy to make a living by working on farms and in lumber camps, all while trying to continue his schooling. He was converted at a revival meeting aged twelve. Bliss became an itinerant music teacher, making house calls on horseback during the winter, and during the summer attending the Normal Academy of Music in Genesco, New York. Sung here by Fiona Campbell, Knock Free Church.
Written by Robert Murray McCheyene, (18-13-1843), the godly Free Church minister at St. Peter's, Dundee. McCheyne took the prophetic title given to Christ by Jeremiah and built this hymn around the theme. Sung here by Donna Maciver, Hayley Macaskill, Fiona Campbell and Debbie Macritchie, although by the end of the singing almost everyone else has joined in!
Sung here by Hayley Macaskill and Debbie Macritchie this hymn was written by Stuart Townend, born in 1963. Stuart is a gifted song writer, son of a Church of England vicar, and was brought up in West Yorkshire. His songs are known, appreciated and sung all over the world today.
This beautiful Gaelic hymn was written by Christina Morrison, from Bayhead in the Isle of Scalpay, near Harris in the Western Isles of Scotland. Christina was born in 1884 and became a Christian when she was round 30. It was then that she began to write spiritual verses although she had been writing poetry since she was quite young. Sung here by James Maciver the song celebrates the richness of God's love and the security provided by it for his people.
