Connecting and Serving our Communities through the Gospel of Jesus Christ
The Importance of the Word Preached
In following the Bible's own teaching, preaching is one of the main elements in our congregational worship. Although this runs contrary to the present-day thinking which tends to communicate and inform in a non-directive way rather than a directive one, the Bible clearly requires us to give prominence to preaching; a directive, propositional method of conveying the truth.
The preaching of God's word is the primary means by which God changes lives and nourishes his people. Romans 10 verses 14-17 clearly specify the importance of preaching - "But how are they to call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent?....So faith comes from hearing and hearing through the word of Christ."
There is a very important place in the church's life for group studies, and discussion, singing praise to God and prayer, but they must serve and support the preaching of the word rather than be dominant over it. For this reason praying and singing precede and follow the sermon in our order of service, as preparation and response to the preaching of the gospel.
