In keeping with the practice in the Free Church of Scotland that uninspired materials of praise are not used in our congregational worship of God, we use the metrical psalms (the Book of Psalms set in metrical verses suitable for congregational singing) in our services. There are two English versions of the metrical psalms in use, the Scottish Psalter of 1650, revised edition 1977, and Sing Psalms, a new metrical version produced in 2003 by the Free Church of Scotland. In addition, for our Gaelic services we use a version of the metrical psalms in Gaelic.
We do not use musical instruments in our congregational singing. Instead the praise is led by a "Precentor", who chooses a suitable tune for each item of praise and begins each item followed then by the congregation. We retain the traditional "singing out the line" in Gaelic, where the Precentor alone sings each consecutive line of the verses followed by the congregation.
